READERS' SELECT - Favourite Health Food Store: Old Kitchen Cupboard
By Claudelle Boudreau
For The Record
Because their business revolves around something so close to their hearts, Stuart Janzen and his wife Patricia Weber feel
particularly honored at being named the Record's Readers' Select winner for Favourite Health Food Store.
Their Belmont Village business - The Old Kitchen Cupboard - specializes in all things natural and carries a huge selection
of organic foods and vitamins. From dried goods and general grocery items to personal hygiene products, dairy, fresh fruits
and vegetables, the store offers a bit of something for everyone.
Since its inception in 1986, it has attracted a loyal following of customers looking for quality products and a selection
that is second to none.
"We see a good mix of customers - young and old, male and female," says Stuart, adding that he thinks they've
been able to draw so many regulars because of their reputation for 'honesty and integrity.'
They also come for the selection, he says. From bulk goods and packaged grocery items to pure drinking water and frozen
yogurt (a summer specialty), there's more diversity than most people would expect to find. Natural Factors, Flora, Prairie
Naturals and Preferred Nutrition are among the all-Canadian brand names available in vitamins and supplements. Field Gate
organic meats as well.
Patricia credits the staff for much of the store's longevity. In addition to Stuart and Patricia, there are six other
staff members (their daughter Jodi Janzen, managers Kevin Knoll and Joanne Czarny - both certified natural product advisors,
Shannon York, Mary McCallion and Sarika Bhatt).
"They are such beautiful people; they're very friendly and extremely knowledgeable," says Patricia.
Today's consumer is much more informed, she notes, and they want to feel confident in their selections and the information
available to them. "We're pleased to be able to give them that."
Considered a pioneer in the local health food industry, The Old Kitchen Cupboard appeals to anyone looking for healthy
alternatives and good old-fashioned service.
